Loved this essay! The "regression to the mean" point is really interesting. Groups of highly ambitious students conforming to what feels prestigious all feels backwards. The same group of people (including myself) who want outlier outcomes all do the same thing as their peers. Yet if you do and think the same as everyone around you, then you're by definition average.

This is one of the most relatable and incredible Substack essays I've ever read! I grew up going to international school where obscene wealth was normalized and internalized for me, and part of what I'm coming to grips with as an adult is achieving the level of wealth I've become accustomed to, by myself, will be a larger struggle than anything I've done previously in life
